The Warm Light Edit: 6 Ways to Light an Evening

Updated September 14, 2026

Overhead lighting makes a room look like a room. Candlelight makes it look like an evening. These six cover both halves of that - the candles themselves, bought in the quantities you actually burn through, and the holders that stop them looking like emergency supplies.

Three things worth knowing up front, because the photographs do not say them: on two of these listings the candles shown are not included, and on one the holder is not.

DECORKEY Amber Glass Hanging and Tabletop Lantern, 11 inch
01

DECORKEY Amber Glass Hanging and Tabletop Lantern, 11 inch

An 11 inch iron lantern, 4.1 inches across, with textured amber glass panels and cut metal openwork that throws patterned light on the wall behind it. A ring on top means it hangs from a hook or sits on a table, and it takes a tealight or a flameless LED rather than a large candle. The seller rates it for outdoor use under cover.

Tobeape Ivory Spiral Taper Candles, 10 inch, 12 Pack, Unscented
02

Tobeape Ivory Spiral Taper Candles, 10 inch, 12 Pack, Unscented

Twelve ivory spiral tapers, 10 inches tall on a 0.85 inch base, which is the standard size most holders are cut for. Paraffin wax with pure cotton wicks, unscented, and the seller states about eight hours of burn each. They are dripless when burned upright out of a draft with the wick trimmed short, which is the seller's own instruction rather than a guarantee. Worth knowing: the candelabra in the photograph is not part of the listing.

Stonebriar Unscented Ivory Pillar Candles, 3 x 4 inch, Pack of 6
03

Stonebriar Unscented Ivory Pillar Candles, 3 x 4 inch, Pack of 6

Six unscented ivory pillars at 3 by 4 inches, over-dipped paraffin with lead-free cotton wicks and about 35 hours of burn each. That size is the one most lanterns and glass hurricanes are built around, which is why it is the pillar worth buying in bulk. Each candle arrives individually wrapped in a divided box. The wooden holder in the photograph is not included.

Sziqiqi Vintage Distressed Metal Pillar Candle Holders, Set of 2
04

Sziqiqi Vintage Distressed Metal Pillar Candle Holders, Set of 2

A pair of distressed iron holders, 6.3 and 9 inches tall, with a matte finish and velvet bottoms so they do not scratch a mantel. The dish takes pillar candles 2 to 3 inches across, and the base is 4.3 inches wide, which is heavy enough that a tall pillar does not make it tip. The seller states plainly that candles are not included, despite the photograph.

Vixdonos Gold Taper Candlestick Holders in Three Heights, Set of 3
05

Vixdonos Gold Taper Candlestick Holders in Three Heights, Set of 3

Three candlestick holders at 7.5, 9 and 10.25 inches, meant to stand together so the flames sit at different heights. The candle hole is 0.75 inches, which fits standard tapers, and the hourglass shape catches dripping wax on the stem instead of the table. Velvet under the base. One caution on the name: it is sold as Brass Gold, but the bullets say iron and the spec table says aluminum, so it is a gold finish rather than brass. Candles not included.

Chesapeake Bay Candle Mind & Body Serenity + Calm Scented Candles, 8.8 oz, 2-Pack
06

Chesapeake Bay Candle Mind & Body Serenity + Calm Scented Candles, 8.8 oz, 2-Pack

Two 8.8 oz jars of lavender thyme in a soy wax blend, with self-trimming wicks and about fifty hours of burn in each. The fragrance is built on natural essential oils and the jars are poured in the USA.

If you buy one thing, make it the pillar candles. Six at 3 by 4 inches is the size almost every lantern and glass hurricane is built around, they burn about 35 hours each, and buying them by the box is the difference between lighting candles on an ordinary Tuesday and saving them for guests. The amber lantern is the one that changes a wall rather than a table - the cut metal throws patterns behind it. Three things to check before ordering. The tapers are 0.85 inches at the base, so measure the holders you own. The distressed holders take pillars 2 to 3 inches across, and the gold candlesticks take standard tapers at 0.75 inches. And read the photographs carefully on this page: candles are sold separately from holders, and holders separately from candles, in both directions.
